Qigong for Spring and the Wood Element

We are moving into the  spring and the Wood phase of the 5 Element cycle. Wood qi is characterized as an energy moving forwards, upwards, growing and expanding. Think of the power of the little crocus pushing its way up through the crusty ice of early spring. In humans the wood qi manifests as an active energy moving our ambitions, passions, and inspirations -- moving us forward with courage and creativity towards projects that call to us. Our qigong practice will focus on strengthening the wood element within us allowing the seeds that have been quiet through the winter months to grow in your life.

5 Element Qigong

The 5 Elements is a core concept in Daoism and Chinese Medicine used to describe the different types of energy at work in the natural world. The elements are Metal, Water, Wood, Fire, and Earth. The ancient Chinese saw the human body as a microcosm of the macrocosm. So as part of nature, our qi is also made up of the unique energetics of these five elements. The elements are symbolic of how different types of qi (life energy) behave as they move through nature and through us. They correspond to seasons as well as organ and meridian systems in the body. When out of balance, our qi flow can become deficient, stagnant, or excessive. The 5 Element flow is designed to balance the elemental energies you are currently experiencing, so your entire system can experience harmony.

Holiday Qigong

A mindfulness practice, which helps us face all of life's experiences with a calm strength, can be especially helpful during the holidays. The energy of the holidays is highly active and social. It can be especially overstimulating for introverts, and if we're with family, or if we're feeling the absence of family it can bring up old emotional patterns. That's not to say the holidays are overwhelming or triggering for everyone, but all that external energy is very Yang. So we feel December's highly Yang cultural energy, just as nature is moving into its most Yin time, winter.   Given this mismatch of energies our December classes will have an extra focus on building internal Yin energy to help maintain equilibrium during the holidays and align with winter.
